Case IH U38 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Chassis Control Module (CCM): Synchroniser potentiometer signal is out of range for the forward position

The transmission controller is receiving a voltage signal from the synchroniser potentiometer that falls outside the expected or calibrated parameters when the synchroniser attempts to move into the forward position.

   Check if the synchroniser potentiometer has been painted over during factory production, which can cause sticking or poor grounding.

   Inspect the synchroniser potentiometer and its wiring harness/connector for physical damage, corrosion, or swapped connectors.

   Use a voltmeter to check the synchroniser potentiometer signal voltage to see if it is registering correctly when shifted.

   Determine if the synchroniser assembly itself is mechanically very tight or sticky (mechanical binding).

   Locate the Component

   Locate the forward/reverse synchroniser potentiometer on the side of the transmission housing.

   Inspect and Clean

   Disconnect the potentiometer connector. Clean any paint, dirt, or corrosion from the sensor body and the electrical contacts.

   Test the Circuit

   With the ignition ON, measure the reference voltage at the connector to ensure the TCM/CCM is sending the correct voltage (typically 5V or 8V depending on the specific model year).

   Recalibrate

   If the voltmeter shows the potentiometer signal is actually OK, the issue may just be a sticky synchroniser. Perform a transmission calibration procedure (often accessed via the "H-Menu" on the dash) to cycle the solenoids and attempt to free up the synchroniser.

   Replace Potentiometer

   If the potentiometer fails the voltage sweep test or is physically damaged, replace it with a new unit and perform a full transmission calibration.

   Internal Repair

   If the sensor is new, the wiring is good, and calibration fails to clear the U38 code, the synchroniser assembly inside the transmission is mechanically jammed and will require splitting the tractor for internal transmission repair.
