Case IH U41 – Powertrain Control Unit (PCU): PTO speed detected (PTO brake circuit open or PTO solenoid sticking)
Issue description
The control module is receiving a rotational speed signal from the PTO twist/speed sensor while the PTO switch is in the OFF position. The system flags this because the PTO shaft is physically turning when it should be stationary, typically caused by a sticking PTO solenoid or an open PTO brake circuit.

Check the cause
Visually verify if the rear PTO shaft is actually spinning under power with the switch OFF, or if the sensor is sending a false signal.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors going to the PTO speed sensor for broken wires or shorts.
Test the PTO engagement and brake solenoids on the rear hydraulic valve block for an open circuit, short to ground, or lack of 12V power.
Warm the hydraulic fluid to at least 120°F and attempt to run the electronic PTO calibration procedure.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the remotes.
Locate the Solenoids
Access the hydraulic solenoid valve block, typically located at the rear of the tractor behind the hydraulic remotes. The PTO control solenoids are usually mounted horizontally.
Inspect and Clean the PTO Solenoid
Disconnect the wiring harness and remove the PTO engagement solenoid valve. Inspect the plunger and spool for scoring, debris, or sticking. Clean the valve thoroughly with brake cleaner. If the plunger does not move freely, the valve must be replaced.
Inspect the PTO Brake Solenoid
Remove the PTO brake solenoid and test its resistance. If it tests as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or shows signs of mechanical failure, replace it.
Reassembly
Install the new or cleaned solenoids and reconnect the electrical harnesses.
Test and Calibrate
Start the tractor and warm the hydraulic oil to operating temperature. Verify that the PTO shaft no longer spins when the switch is off. Finally, perform the PCU PTO calibration procedure via the instrument cluster to clear the code and teach the controller the new valve engagement parameters. (Note: If the shaft still spins with new solenoids, the internal PTO brake clutch pack is likely worn out and requires a teardown).
