U41

Case IH U41 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Synchroniser potentiometer signal is out of range for the 4 position

Issue description

The transmission controller is reading a voltage signal from the synchronizer potentiometer that falls outside the expected or calibrated parameters when the synchronizer is attempting to engage, or is currently in, the 4th gear/range position.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • MXM series
  • MX series
  • TG series
  • Puma
  • TM series
  • T6000 series
  • T7000 series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect if the synchronizer potentiometer has been painted over during factory production, which can cause poor connections or sticking

  2. Inspect the synchronizer potentiometer and its wiring harness/connector for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Determine if the synchronizer assembly is mechanically very tight or sticky

  4. Check the synchronizer potentiometer signal voltage in real-time using a voltmeter or the tractor's onboard diagnostic H-menu (H9 menu)

Repair steps

  1. Monitor the Signal

Enter the tractor's diagnostic mode (H9 menu) or back-probe the sensor with a voltmeter to observe the potentiometer signal voltage.

  2. Inspect and Clean

Check the synchronizer potentiometer and its connector. If it has been painted over, damaged, or is corroded, clean the contacts and repair the wiring harness as necessary.

  3. Attempt Calibration

If the voltage signal appears normal but the code persists, the synchronizer assembly may just be sticky. Run the automated transmission calibration procedure. The repeated hydraulic actuation during calibration is often enough to free up a sticky synchronizer.

  4. Replace Sensor

If the potentiometer signal is erratic, dead, or fails to calibrate, replace the synchronizer potentiometer.

  5. Internal Transmission Repair

If the sensor is replaced and calibration still fails, the synchronizer assembly inside the transmission is mechanically jammed or damaged and will require internal mechanical repair.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Synchronizer Potentiometer (Sensor)

  • Synchronizer Assembly / Solenoid

Only if the mechanical assembly is jammed or the solenoid has failed
