Case IH U43 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Chassis Control Module (CCM): Synchroniser did not move toward 4, even at max pressure.

Issue description

The transmission control system commanded a shift into the 4th gear/position and applied maximum hydraulic pressure, but the synchroniser failed to physically move into place. This indicates either a mechanical binding of the synchroniser, a lack of actual hydraulic pressure reaching the shift mechanism, a failed shift solenoid, or a faulty position sensor (potentiometer) giving an inaccurate reading.

Check the cause

  1. Swap the connectors for the #4 and #5 shift solenoids to see if the fault code changes (e.g., to U44), indicating a faulty #4 solenoid.

  2. Inspect the synchroniser potentiometer and its connector for physical damage or factory paint bridging the sensor contacts.

  3. Access the 'H9' diagnostic menu and use a voltmeter to monitor the potentiometer signal while shifting to verify if it is out of range.

  4. Verify that there is adequate transmission oil pressure reaching the synchroniser circuit.

  5. Remove the transmission top cover and visually watch the synchroniser movement during a shift command to detect mechanical binding or failure.

Repair steps

  1. Test the Solenoid

    Swap the #4 and #5 solenoid connectors. If the issue follows the solenoid, recover the system fluids, remove the faulty #4 transmission solenoid, and install a replacement.

  2. Test the Potentiometer

    If the solenoid is fine, inspect the synchroniser potentiometer. Clean off any factory paint bridging the sensor contacts. If the connector is damaged or the voltmeter shows a dead/erratic signal on the H9 check, replace the potentiometer.

  3. Check Hydraulic Pressure

    If the electronics are functioning, hook up a hydraulic pressure gauge to the transmission test port. If pressure is low, troubleshoot the transmission hydraulic pump or valve block for leaks/blockages.

  4. Mechanical Repair

    If electrical and hydraulic systems are fully operational, the synchroniser assembly is likely physically stuck or damaged. Remove the transmission top cover. Inspect the synchroniser forks and rings for excessive wear, scoring, or a 'tight/sticky' condition. Replace the synchroniser assembly if mechanical binding is confirmed.
