U45

Case IH U45 – PCU (Power Control Unit) / PTO Control Module: No PTO shaft movement (PTO circuit open)

Issue description

The tractor's control system has commanded the Power Take-Off (PTO) to engage, but the system detects no rotational movement from the PTO shaft. The controller flags this as an "open circuit," meaning the electrical path to the PTO clutch solenoid is likely broken, the solenoid coil has failed, or there is a mechanical failure preventing the torque path from engaging.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness leading to the PTO clutch solenoid for breaks, chafing, or disconnected plugs that would cause an open circuit

  2. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the PTO clutch solenoid coil (an infinite reading confirms an internal open circuit)

  3. Verify that the PTO twist/speed sensor is plugged in and functioning

  4. Inspect the in-cab PTO engagement push-pull switch for internal failure or melted contacts

  5. Ensure the PTO brake solenoid is not stuck on or locking the shaft mechanically

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the PTO clutch solenoid valve on the rear hydraulic/transmission housing.

  3. Inspect Connections

Disconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid. Clean the pins with contact cleaner and inspect for corrosion or pushed-out pins.

  4. Test/Replace Solenoid

Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil. If it reads open (infinite resistance), remove the retaining nut, slide the old coil off the valve stem, and install a replacement solenoid coil.

  5. Trace Wiring (If Solenoid is Good)

If the solenoid tests within specification, trace the wiring harness back to the PCU/PTO Control Module. Repair any broken wires or damaged loom sections.

  6. Test/Replace Cab Switch

If the wiring is intact, test the 4-pin in-cab PTO engagement switch. If it fails continuity tests when pulled, replace the switch assembly in the command console.

  7. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery and start the tractor. Clear the stored fault codes. You must then perform a PTO calibration procedure (typically accessed via the H8 menu on the digital instrument cluster) so the controller can learn the correct engagement pressures and twist sensor baseline.
