U46

Case IH U46 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): 50kph clutch 5 solenoid not present

Issue description

The Transmission Control Module (TCU) logs this fault when the 50kph clutch 5 solenoid is not detected, which can prevent calibration and indicates an open circuit, failed coil, or incorrect machine configuration.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • CVX

Check the cause

  1. Verify Machine Configuration: Ensure the tractor is actually a 50kph vehicle. If the TCU was recently flashed or lost configuration, it may be looking for a solenoid that does not exist on a 40kph tractor.

  2. Check for an Open Circuit: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission ECU to the clutch 5 solenoid for rubbed-through wires, disconnected plugs, or corroded pins.

  3. Test the Solenoid: Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to measure resistance across the coil pins. An 'O.L' (open line) or infinite resistance reading confirms internal coil failure.

  4. Check Module Power: Verify the transmission module fuses are intact, as a lack of 12V power to the solenoid bank can trigger 'not present' codes.

Repair steps

  1. Locate solenoid

Locate the transmission control valve manifold (usually on the side of the transmission housing or under the cab) and identify the specific 50kph / Clutch 5 solenoid.

  2. Clean area

Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Remove faulty solenoid

Disconnect the electrical harness. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem and slide the electromagnetic coil off the valve cartridge. (If the cartridge is leaking/sticking, unthread it from the manifold and catch any hydraulic fluid).

  4. Install new part

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the cartridge and tighten the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks into place.

  5. Recalibrate transmission

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. You must perform a transmission calibration procedure (H8 procedure or Auto Calibration Procedure) so the TCU can learn the fill times and pressures for the new clutch 5 solenoid.
