Case IH U47 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): 19th gear solenoid not found

Issue description

Triggers when the control module attempts to communicate with or actuate the solenoid responsible for the 19th gear (used for 50 kph transport speeds) but detects an open circuit, a missing component, or a configuration mismatch.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Tractor Configuration: The most common cause of this code on a 40 kph tractor is a configuration error. If the tractor is not a 50 kph vehicle, it does not physically have a 19th gear solenoid. The TCU must be reconfigured to recognize the correct transmission type.

  2. Wiring and Connector Inspection: If the tractor is a 50 kph model, inspect the wiring harness and the specific electrical connector (often labeled C290 or C268) going to the 19th gear/Clutch 5 solenoid for open circuits, backed-out pins, or shorts to ground.

  3. Active Diagnostics: Use the tractor's onboard "H9" analog diagnostics menu via the instrument cluster to monitor the potentiometer signal and solenoid current to see if the TCU is actively trying to send a signal.

  4. Solenoid Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the 19th gear solenoid coil to determine if it has failed internally (open circuit).

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the ignition.

  2. Access the Transmission Valve Block

    Locate the transmission control valve block, typically situated on the top or side of the transmission housing under the cab.

  3. Isolate the Solenoid

    Locate the 19th gear solenoid (Clutch 5). Disconnect its electrical harness.

  4. Test/Clean

    Clean the connector with contact cleaner. If the wiring harness was damaged, repair the open circuit. If the solenoid tested out of specification during diagnostics, proceed to replacement.

  5. Replace the Solenoid

    Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining fasteners holding the solenoid in place and pull the solenoid cartridge out.

  6. Install New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and torque the retaining fasteners to OEM specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Recalibrate

    Turn the key switch ON. Enter the "H" menu (using the diagnostic tool or onboard sequence) to clear the stored U47 fault code from the EEPROM. Perform a full transmission clutch calibration to ensure the new solenoid engages smoothly.
