U53

Case IH U53 – Transmission Controller (TCM) / PTO Controller: Remote Levers Used When Calibrating

Issue description

A procedural error code triggered when the system detects that one or more of the hydraulic remote valve levers were moved out of the neutral position while the tractor was actively undergoing a calibration routine (such as a PTO torque sensor calibration or transmission/clutch calibration).

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM120
  • MXM130
  • MXM140
  • MXM155
  • MXM175
  • MXM190

Check the cause

  1. Confirm whether the operator accidentally bumped or operated the remote levers during the calibration process.

  2. Verify that all remote levers are physically resting in their center/neutral detent positions.

  3. If the levers were definitely not touched during calibration, check the remote lever potentiometers/switches for proper resistance and voltage to ensure they are correctly reading the neutral position.

Repair steps

  1. Stop calibration

    Stop the current calibration procedure.

  2. Reset levers

Reset ALL remote levers back to the strict neutral position.

  3. Clear code

Clear the U53 error code from the transmission/PTO controller display.

  4. Restart calibration

Restart the PTO torque calibration procedure (TCP) or transmission clutch calibration.

  5. Perform calibration without interference

Do not touch the remote levers, steering wheel, or any other unprompted controls throughout the entire calibration process.

  6. Test and replace sensor

If the U53 code immediately returns without the levers being touched, use a multimeter to test the remote lever switches/potentiometers for a short or open circuit that is sending a false 'active' signal to the ECU, and replace the faulty switch.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Remote Valve Lever Switch / Remote Valve Potentiometer

Part numbers vary heavily based on whether the tractor is equipped with mechanical or electro-hydraulic remotes (EDC). Always verify the specific valve stack configuration in the CNH parts catalog using the tractor's PIN/Serial Number.
