Case IH U58 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) or PTO Controller: PTO twist sensor open circuit

The control module is not detecting a complete electrical circuit to the PTO twist sensor, which monitors the rotational speed and torque of the PTO shaft. This is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected or corroded connector, or an internal failure (open circuit) within the sensor itself.

   Visually inspect the PTO twist sensor near the rear PTO shaft housing, checking the wiring harness and connectors for physical damage, chafing, or disconnected pins (broken wires are highly common on Puma and MXM tractors)

   Disconnect the sensor and check for moisture, dirt, or corrosion inside the plug

   Perform a sensor continuity test using a multimeter to measure resistance across the pins; infinite resistance (OL) indicates an internal open circuit and a failed sensor

   If the sensor tests good, perform a harness continuity test from the sensor connector back to the Transmission/PTO controller to isolate a break in the wiring

   Ensure the PTO is completely turned off, as engaging it during a calibration procedure can trigger related codes

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to protect the electrical system.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the PTO twist sensor at the rear of the tractor near the PTO output shaft.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire in the harness (common behind the remotes or under the cab), splice and seal the broken wire using weather-resistant heat shrink connectors.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the sensor itself tested open, unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in the housing and pull the old sensor straight out (have a rag ready for weeping fluid).

   Install New Sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

   Calibrate

   Clear the stored fault codes. Perform the PTO configuration/calibration routine via the tractor's display or diagnostic menu so the controller can learn the new sensor's baseline values.
