U59

Case IH U59 – Powertrain Control Unit (PCU), Transmission Controller, or dedicated PTO Controller: PTO Sensor Short Circuit to Ground

Issue description

The controller has detected that the voltage or resistance on the PTO twist sensor circuit has dropped to near zero. This typically means the sensor's signal wire has rubbed through its insulation and is touching the tractor's metal chassis (ground), or the sensor itself has suffered an internal short circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • MXM
  • Case IH MXM Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH MX / TG Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring and the 3-pin connector at the PTO twist sensor for visible damage, corrosion, or pinched wires.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and measure its internal resistance, comparing it against OEM specifications to check for an internal short.

  3. Disconnect the PTO controller connector and, with the key switch off, check the sensor signal circuit for continuity to ground to identify a harness short.

  4. With the key switch on, check for proper reference voltage at the sensor connector to ensure the controller is sending power.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the PTO twist sensor at the rear PTO assembly.

  3. Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Trace the harness back to the controller and repair the damaged section of the wire.

Perform this step if your diagnostic checks revealed a wiring short.

  5. Remove the faulty PTO twist sensor.

Perform this step if the wiring is intact and the sensor failed the resistance test.

  6. Install the new PTO twist sensor and reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Perform a PTO twist sensor calibration using the tractor's H-Menu or electronic service tool.

Crucial Final Step: If you skip this step, the tractor will log code U70 or 3123 ("PTO twist sensor not calibrated").
