Case IH U69 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Creeper stuck.

Issue description

Triggered during the transmission/clutch calibration process when the controller attempts to engage or disengage the creeper gear, but the mechanism is physically stuck, or the sensor/solenoid fails to confirm its movement.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure pre-calibration conditions are met: tractor completely stationary, handbrake applied, and shuttle lever in neutral.

  2. Check the creeper engagement switch in the cab and its linkage to ensure it is sending power to the solenoid.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the creeper solenoid on the transmission control valve (TCV) for open circuits, shorts, or frayed insulation.

  4. Ohm-test the creeper solenoid to verify it is within spec (e.g., 7.3 Ohms for 12V DC solenoids).

  5. Inspect the creeper solenoid underneath the valve body for physical damage from field debris.

  6. Clear memory using the 'H' menu via the diagnostic connector (special tool 380000843). Run an H8 command to clear all calibration values and stored fault codes, or an HC command to erase stored error codes without wiping calibration data.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve (TCV) assembly and identify the creeper valve body section (usually the lower plate).

  2. Free the Spool (Temporary Check)

    If the solenoid tests fine electrically but the valve is stuck, lightly tap the solenoid housing with a hammer to see if it frees the internal spool.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

    If the solenoid is dead or permanently jammed, disconnect the wiring harness, remove the retaining hardware, and pull the solenoid valve.

  4. Replace O-Rings

    Always replace the O-rings (typically three different sizes on the spool) when installing the new solenoid to prevent internal hydraulic leaks.

  5. Reprogramming (If Applicable)

    If you are replacing an entire electronic remote valve assembly (EHR stack) rather than just the solenoid, you must reprogram the valve number sequence using the 'HJ' menu, as replacement valve assemblies are supplied blank.

  6. Recalibrate

    Turn the key switch ON, enter the transmission calibration mode, and re-run the clutch/transmission calibration to ensure code U69 does not return.
