U72

Case IH U72 – Transmission / Steering Controller: Proximity sensor input is out of range - open

Issue description

The control module is detecting an open circuit or an out-of-range signal from the proximity sensor associated with the steering wheel, specifically within the Fast Steer System (FSS).

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the steering wheel is in the correct position, as an incorrect position can falsely trigger this out-of-range code.

  2. Inspect the proximity sensor connector and wiring harness (specifically wire 3172) for an open circuit, broken wires, or corroded pins.

  3. Test the proximity sensor for internal failure using a multimeter to ensure it is sending the correct voltage/resistance back to the FSS control unit.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Access the steering column/Fast Steer System valve block to locate the steering wheel control proximity sensor.

  3. Inspect and Clean

Disconnect the sensor. Clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and inspect the wiring harness for any visible breaks or chafing.

  4. Perform Continuity Test

Check for continuity between the sensor connector and the FSS control unit (specifically checking the primary/secondary positive and negative lines).

  5. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails testing (or physically shows an open circuit), remove the faulty proximity sensor and install the replacement.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery, turn the activation switch off and back on to reset the system. You may need to perform a steering angle sensor / LVDT calibration via the tractor's display monitor to ensure the new sensor is recognized and centered correctly.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Fast Steer System (FSS) Steering Proximity Sensor / Steering Wheel Control Proximity Sensor

Ensure the sensor is compatible with the Fast Steer System (FSS) for your specific Puma, Steiger, or Magnum generation.
