Case IH U73 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Electronic Power Steering / Fast Steer module: Proximity sensor input is out of range - closed

This is a calibration error code that triggers when the system is attempting to run a calibration routine. It indicates that the proximity sensor, which monitors the position of the steering wheel or fast-steer mechanism, is sending a continuous 'closed' signal that falls outside the expected voltage or operational parameters during the calibration sequence.

   Verify the steering wheel is centered and positioned exactly as specified in the calibration manual before starting the routine

   Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector going to the steering proximity sensor for pushed pins, corrosion, or a short-to-ground

   Test the proximity switch with a multimeter to verify if it is internally shorted or stuck closed

   Preparation

   Park the machine on a flat, level surface and turn off the engine.

   Repositioning

   If the calibration failed simply due to operator error, center the steering wheel to the correct starting position and re-initiate the calibration sequence.

   Wiring Repair

   If the steering wheel was positioned correctly, disconnect the proximity sensor. Inspect the harness. If the wiring is chafed and shorting to the chassis (causing the 'closed' reading), repair the damaged wire and clear the code.

   Sensor Replacement

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails continuity testing (stuck closed), remove the mounting hardware for the proximity sensor on the steering column/valve assembly and install a new sensor.

   Recalibration

   After replacing the sensor, you must re-run the Fast Steer / Transmission calibration procedure to ensure the new sensor is recognized and the U73 code clears.
