Case IH U75 – Central Control Unit (CCU) or Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Quick fill calibration value too high

Issue description

During the transmission/clutch calibration process, the system detected that the "quick fill" calibration value for the clutch exceeded the maximum acceptable limit. This means the system is having to send too much fluid or keep the valve open too long to achieve clutch engagement, pointing to an electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical failure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the clutch solenoid for chafed wires, corrosion, or poor pin fitment that could cause voltage drops or open circuits.

  2. Test the clutch solenoid valve electrically (for proper resistance) and hydraulically (to ensure the spool is not sticking).

  3. If the electrical circuit and solenoid are functioning correctly, check for internal mechanical problems such as worn clutch friction plates, damaged return springs, or leaking hydraulic seals inside the clutch pack.

  4. During calibration, monitor the displayed potentiometer readings on the dash/display to see if they are erratic or out of range.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect and Test

    Locate the master/directional clutch solenoids on the side of the transmission valve block (often located on the left side, just to the rear of the steps on Magnum models). Inspect the wiring harness.

  2. Replace Faulty Solenoid

    If the solenoid is found to be sticking or electrically dead, remove the retaining nut and slide the coil off, then unthread the cartridge.

  3. Torque Specifications

    When installing a new solenoid cartridge, do not over-torque the parts. Standard practice for these specific CNH cartridges is approximately 18 ft-lbs for the cartridge body and 5-6 ft-lbs for the solenoid retaining nut.

  4. Address Mechanical Failures

    If the solenoid and wiring are perfectly fine, the transmission will need to be split or the clutch pack removed to rebuild the mechanical clutch assembly and replace worn seals/discs.

  5. Clear Codes and Recalibrate

    Access the CCU/Transmission sub-system screen. Use the HC menu to erase all stored error codes without erasing calibration information (Note: The H8 menu clears ALL calibration values and stored fault codes by resetting the EEPROM to default. Only use H8 if you intend to perform a complete recalibration from scratch). Run the transmission calibration procedure until successful.
