U77

Case IH U77 – Transmission Control Module / Electronic Draft Control (EDC): Damper calibration value too high

Issue description

This fault code indicates that during the transmission calibration process, the value returned by the damper sensor (potentiometer) exceeds the maximum acceptable limit.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Puma 125
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225 CVX
  • Maxxum 100
  • Maxxum 110 EP
  • Maxxum 115 EP
  • Maxxum 115U
  • Maxxum 120 EP
  • Maxxum 125 EP
  • Maxxum 140 EP
  • Magnum 7100
  • Magnum 7200
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors going to the damper sensor/potentiometer for shorts, opens, or corrosion.

  2. Check the displayed potentiometer reading on the dash/monitor during the calibration process to see if the sensor is returning erratic or out-of-range values.

  3. Verify that the transmission damper was installed correctly (especially if recent transmission work was performed).

  4. Inspect the driveline and transmission internals for mechanical binding or failure.

Repair steps

  1. Monitor Sensor Values

Enter the tractor's calibration mode. Check the displayed potentiometer reading on the instrument cluster during calibration to confirm the "too high" reading.

  2. Inspect Wiring

Trace the wiring from the damper sensor back to the transmission controller. Repair any damaged wires or loose connector pins.

  3. Inspect/Replace Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the potentiometer reading remains out of specification, the sensor is likely damaged and must be replaced.

  4. Verify Mechanical Integrity

If the sensor and wiring are good, physically inspect the damper installation. Ensure it is mounted correctly and that there are no mechanical driveline issues causing the damper to rest out of its normal physical range.

  5. Clear Codes and Recalibrate

Once the repair is made, you must clear the stored fault codes and recalibrate the transmission. (Note: In the CNH sub-system screen, selecting "H8" will clear all calibration values and stored fault codes from the EEPROM).
