U78

Case IH U78 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Driveline System: Damper calibration value too low

Issue description

Triggered when the system attempts to calibrate the transmission damper/clutch but the sensor returns a value that falls below the minimum acceptable threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Puma 125
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210

  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the damper sensor for shorts, breaks, or corrosion.

  2. Test the damper sensor to ensure it is reading correctly and is not physically damaged.

  3. Verify that the transmission damper was not installed incorrectly during a previous repair.

  4. Inspect the driveline for mechanical binding, excessive wear, or internal leaks.

  5. Ensure the transmission oil is properly warmed up. Calibration requires the oil temperature to be between 10°C and 60°C (if it is too cold, a U19 code will display and calibration will be blocked).

Repair steps

  1. Inspect and Resolve

Based on the diagnostic checks, repair any damaged wiring or replace the faulty damper sensor/transmission damper.

  2. Clear the EEPROM

Turn the ignition key switch ON. Navigate to the transmission sub-system screen. Use the "H8" procedure (via the dimming button/menu) to clear all calibration values and stored fault codes. The lower central display should show "EECL" to confirm the EEPROM has been cleared.

  3. Warm Up the Tractor

Run the tractor until the transmission oil temperature is between 10°C and 60°C (the display should show 'CL' when ready).

  4. Recalibrate

Initiate the transmission calibration sequence. If the mechanical components and sensors are functioning correctly, the U78 code will not return.
