Case IH U79 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) or DEC (Driveline/Electronic Control) controller: PTO twist sensor is not plausible
Issue description
The system is receiving an irregular, out-of-range, or illogical signal from the sensor responsible for monitoring the twist (torque/load) on the Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft. The primary underlying conditions are that the sensor is either physically damaged or incorrectly installed.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Maxxum
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH MX Series
- Case IH TG Series
Check the cause
Inspect the PTO twist sensor for obvious physical damage.
Ensure the sensor is seated and aligned correctly in the PTO housing, as improper installation causes inaccurate readings.
Check the 3-pin electrical connector and wiring harness leading to the sensor for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafing.
If the code appeared during a calibration attempt, verify that the transmission oil is at the correct operating temperature using the tractor's H9 diagnostic menu.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn the ignition key switch OFF to ensure the DEC controller is powered down.
Remove the Sensor
Locate the PTO twist sensor on the rear PTO housing. Disconnect the 3-pin wire connector. Remove the retaining hardware and carefully extract the sensor.
Replace the Sensor
If the sensor is damaged or fails testing, install the new PTO twist sensor. Ensure it is perfectly aligned and seated flush to prevent re-triggering the U79 code due to incorrect installation.
Warm Up the Tractor
Start the tractor and bring the transmission oil up to the correct operating temperature.
Perform Calibration
Enter the tractor's on-board diagnostic menu (H menu). Clear the stored fault codes and run the PTO / Transmission calibration procedure. Note: Using the H8 menu will clear all calibration values and stored fault codes, so follow the specific prompts on the lower central display carefully.
