Case IH U82 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or GCM2: No Low/High Range Synchronizer Movement Sensed
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the transmission control system commanded a shift in the low/high range synchronizer, but the synchronizer potentiometer did not detect the expected physical movement. This can be caused by electrical failures (loss of power to solenoids, faulty potentiometers) or mechanical issues (sticky synchronizer, low hydraulic pressure).

Check the cause
Check transmission module fuses and verify battery voltage, as low voltage can prevent solenoids from actuating.
Check for 12V DC power at the C3 and C4 (High and Low clutch) solenoids.
Verify the clutch pedal potentiometer value to ensure the 'pedal down' value is not reading too high, which can inhibit synchronizer movement.
Check the vehicle's hydraulic pressure to ensure the synchronizer has enough fluid force to physically move.
Perform the H-Menu Potentiometer Test (Channel 56/57) to check synchronizer potentiometer operation. With engine running, transmission in neutral, and clutch released, press and hold downshift for reverse (approx. 75% movement) and upshift for forward (approx. 25% movement).
Repair steps
Inspect Wiring
Trace the wiring harness from the TCM to the low/high range synchronizer solenoids and the synchronizer potentiometer. Repair any shorts, open circuits, or swapped connectors.
Replace the Potentiometer
If the H-Menu test fails or physical inspection reveals broken internal teeth on the potentiometer, remove and replace the synchronizer potentiometer.
Test/Replace Solenoids
If the potentiometer is reading correctly but the synchronizer still won't move, test the PWM solenoid valves for the low/high range. Replace if they are failing to open under a 12V load.
Address Mechanical Binding
If electrical components are sound, the synchronizer itself may be mechanically sticky. Attempt to force a recalibration procedure to unstick it. If it remains stuck, the transmission will require splitting to access and replace the mechanical synchronizer assembly.
Recalibrate the Transmission
Anytime a potentiometer is replaced, a PWM solenoid valve is replaced, or a mechanical transmission repair is effected, you must perform a full transmission calibration procedure before returning the tractor to service.
