Case IH U82 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): No 12VD – No power for C3 and C4 solenoids
Issue description
The transmission control system is failing to detect the required 12-volt direct current (12VD) power supply going to the C3 and C4 clutch solenoids (High and Low clutch solenoids). Without this power, the transmission cannot properly actuate the clutches required for specific gear ratios.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Maxxum
- MX170
- MXU series
- MXU115
- Puma series
- Puma 140
- Puma 210
Check the cause
Check module fuses to verify that the fuses supplying 12V power to the transmission module are intact and not blown
Check battery voltage to ensure the tractor's battery and charging system are providing adequate voltage to the modules
Inspect module connections by checking the wiring harness and connectors at the TCM for loose, corroded, or backed-out pins
Check clutch pedal potentiometer value via the diagnostic menu (a 'pedal down value too high' can sometimes trigger related power or calibration faults)
Repair steps
Test the Power Supply
Use a multimeter to confirm the battery is fully charged and delivering proper voltage (12V+) to the system.
Inspect and Replace Fuses
Locate the fuse panel for the Transmission Control Module. Test all fuses related to the transmission or switched 12V supply. Replace any blown fuses.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors
Disconnect the harness at the TCM and trace the wiring down to the C3 and C4 solenoids on the transmission valve block. Check for continuity, shorts to ground, or damaged wires. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and securely reconnect them.
Test the Solenoids
If power is reaching the solenoids but the fault persists, test the C3 and C4 solenoids directly for proper resistance.
Replace Faulty Components
If a solenoid is found to be internally shorted or open, it must be replaced.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
After repairs are made, clear the U82 fault code from the TCM. Perform a transmission calibration procedure to ensure the C3 and C4 clutches engage properly and the controller learns the new fill times.
