U89

Case IH U89 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / GCM2: Low/high range synchronizer calibration values out of tolerance.

Issue description

This code indicates that during the transmission calibration process, the feedback values received from the low/high range synchronizer potentiometer fell outside the acceptable programmed parameters. The system cannot successfully calibrate the synchronizer, which is usually caused by a faulty potentiometer, a damaged mechanical linkage, or an internal mechanical fault within the transmission.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying transmission codes (such as F02, F42, F43, or F45) which specifically flag potentiometer overvoltage, undervoltage, or out-of-range errors. Diagnose these first if present.

  2. Visually inspect the synchronizer potentiometer and its mechanical linkage on the side of the transmission for loose joints, bent linkage rods, or disconnected wiring harnesses.

  3. Enter the tractor's diagnostic H-Menu to perform the 'HF Synchronizer Potentiometer Check'. Verify reverse position reads approx. 75% and forward position reads approx. 25%. Erratic or unchanging values confirm a faulty potentiometer or linkage.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Potentiometer

Locate the low/high range synchronizer potentiometer on the transmission housing.

  2. Repair/Replace Linkage

If the linkage joint is worn, loose, or binding, replace the linkage hardware. A loose linkage will cause the potentiometer to read inaccurately during shifts.

  3. Replace the Potentiometer

If the linkage is intact but the sensor fails the diagnostic sweep test, disconnect the electrical harness and unbolt the faulty potentiometer. Install the new OEM potentiometer.

  4. Clear Codes

Once the mechanical repair is finished, use the tractor's diagnostic menu or an EST (Electronic Service Tool) to clear the U89 error code.

  5. Recalibrate the Transmission

You must perform a full transmission synchronizer calibration procedure after replacing the sensor or linkage. The tractor will relearn the new minimum and maximum tolerance values. Test the tractor for normal operation.
