U92

Case IH U92 – Transmission Control Module / ECU: Synchronizer potentiometer signal is out of range for F3 position

Issue description

A transmission calibration error where the synchronizer potentiometer signal is out of range for F3 position. The system logs this code when the transmission control system attempts to calibrate or engage the F3 gear, but the feedback signal from the synchronizer potentiometer falls outside the acceptable programmed parameters (typically a calibration value range of 3570 to 4700).

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Puma Series: 130, 145, 150, 165, 170, 175, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 215, 225, 230
  • Case IH Magnum Series: MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285
  • Case IH Maxxum Series: 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 145, 150

Check the cause

  1. Check Calibration Values: Enter the tractor's H-Menu / diagnostic mode and check the displayed potentiometer reading during the F3 synchronizer position calibration. The expected value should be between 3570 and 4700.

  2. Inspect Wiring & Connectors (wiring fault cause): Visually and electrically test the wiring harness leading to the F3 synchronizer potentiometer and the F3 synchronizer solenoids for open circuits, shorts to ground, or corrosion.

  3. Test the Potentiometer (sensor failure cause): Verify that the potentiometer is outputting a smooth, linear voltage signal as the synchronizer moves. If the signal drops out or spikes, the potentiometer is damaged.

  4. Mechanical Driveline Check (mechanical failure cause): If the electrical circuits and sensors are functioning correctly, the fault is likely mechanical. The transmission synchronizer assembly may be physically worn, preventing it from reaching the proper F3 engagement position.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a clean, dry surface. Shut off the engine and ensure that all pressure is relieved from the hydraulic circuits before removing any caps, covers, or valves.

  2. Electrical Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring fault, repair or replace the damaged section of the transmission wiring harness.

  3. Potentiometer / Solenoid Replacement

If the F3 synchronizer potentiometer or solenoid is faulty, disconnect the wiring harness, unbolt the sensor/solenoid from the transmission housing, and install the new OEM component.

  4. Mechanical Repair

If the synchronizer assembly is worn, the transmission will require splitting/disassembly. Use lifting equipment of appropriate capacity. Remove the damaged F3 synchronizer assembly and replace it with a new unit.

  5. Recalibration

After replacing any electrical or mechanical components, you must run the transmission calibration procedure via the tractor's ADIC (dot matrix display) to teach the Transmission ECU the new F3 synchronizer potentiometer positions.
