Case IH U97 – Transmission Control Module (TCU) / Transmission Controller: F2 (Forward 2) gear did not engage properly
Issue description
The F2 (Forward 2) gear did not engage properly. This is a transmission-related error that typically occurs during operation or during the transmission calibration process. The system detects that the physical engagement of the F2 synchronizer did not complete as commanded, which triggers the code and may prevent the transmission from shifting properly.

Check the cause
Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic H-Menu (e.g., the 'HF' synchronizer potentiometer check) or an electronic service tool to monitor the live voltage/percentage of the synchronizer potentiometer. Ensure the signal changes smoothly without dropping out.
Visually and electrically test the wiring harness connecting the TCU to the synchronizer potentiometer and the Clutch B/dump valve solenoids. Look for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or open circuits.
Test the electrical actuation and hydraulic pressure of Clutch B and the dump valve to rule out a stuck valve or failed solenoid.
If electrical and hydraulic systems are functioning, check for a jammed synchronizer or mechanical driveline failure preventing the F2 gear from physically engaging.

Resolve Wiring Issues
If the diagnostic checks reveal a short or break in the wiring to the potentiometer or dump valve, repair the harness using OEM-approved connectors or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Faulty Sensors/Valves
If the synchronizer potentiometer is damaged or reading out of the calibrated range, remove and replace it. If the dump valve or Clutch B solenoid is failing mechanically or electrically, replace the valve assembly or solenoid coil.
Mechanical Driveline Repair
If the potentiometer and valves are perfectly functional, the tractor will need to be split to access the transmission driveline. Inspect the F2 synchronizer assembly and Clutch B mechanicals for wear, broken springs, or damaged friction discs, and rebuild as necessary.
Clear Codes and Recalibrate
After any transmission repair, you must clear the stored fault codes (often done via the H8 menu which clears EEPROM calibration values and stored codes).
Perform Transmission Calibration
Warm the transmission oil to operating temperature and run the automated transmission/clutch calibration procedure so the TCU can relearn the engagement points of the new potentiometer and clutch valves.
