U98

Case IH U98 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Central Control Unit (CCU): R1 did not engage properly

Issue description

The system detects that the transmission failed to physically or electronically shift into the R1 (Reverse 1) position.

Check the cause

  1. Clear and Verify: Access the transmission sub-system screen on the dash. Use the H8 or HC menu operation to clear stored fault codes and EEPROM values, then test drive to see if U98 returns.

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the synchronizer potentiometer and the Clutch B / Dump Valve solenoids. Look for chafed wires, corrosion in the connectors, or short circuits to ground.

  3. Potentiometer Sweep Test: Use a multimeter or the tractor's diagnostic screen to monitor the synchronizer potentiometer voltage. The voltage should change smoothly without dropping out or spiking as the synchronizer moves.

  4. Hydraulic Pressure Test: Check the transmission charge pressure and the specific pressure at the dump valve. The dump valve should crack open at 10 bar (145 psi) and be fully open at 15 bar (217.5 psi).

  5. Solenoid Test: Ohm-test the Clutch B and dump valve solenoids to ensure they are within specification and receiving proper voltage from the TCM.

Repair steps

  1. Address Electrical Faults

If the wiring harness is damaged, repair or replace the affected sections. If the synchronizer potentiometer fails the sweep test, replace the potentiometer.

  2. Address Hydraulic Faults

If the dump valve or Clutch B solenoid is sticking or electrically dead, remove and replace the valve/solenoid assembly. Clean the valve body ports to ensure no debris is causing the valve to stick.

  3. Address Mechanical Faults

If electrical and hydraulic systems test perfectly, the issue is a mechanical driveline failure. The tractor will need to be split to access the transmission. Inspect the R1 synchronizer assembly, shift forks, and Clutch B pack for excessive wear, broken teeth, or burnt clutch discs. Replace damaged mechanical components.

  4. Recalibration

After replacing the potentiometer, dump valve, or any internal transmission components, you must perform a full transmission calibration (clutch fill times and synchronizer positions) using the tractor's onboard calibration menus or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
