Case IH U99 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Syncro potentiometer signal is out of range for R2 position.
Issue description
The transmission controller is receiving a voltage or resistance signal from the R2 synchronizer potentiometer that falls outside the expected calibration parameters. The system cannot verify that the synchronizer has successfully or fully engaged the R2 gear position.

Check the cause
Enter the transmission calibration 'H Menu' on the instrument cluster and check the live displayed potentiometer reading during the calibration sequence for an erratic, dead, or stuck signal
Inspect the wiring harness routing to the R2 synchronizer potentiometer and the R2 solenoids for chafed wires, open circuits, or shorts to ground
Disconnect the potentiometer and check for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion at the connector
If the electrical sweep of the sensor tests fine, check for mechanical binding (e.g., damaged shift fork, failed synchronizer ring, or hydraulic dump valve issue) preventing the synchronizer from moving to the R2 position
Repair steps
Safety Prep
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and ensure all pressure is relieved from the hydraulic circuits before removing any transmission covers or valves.
Access the Sensor
Locate the R2 synchronizer potentiometer on the side of the transmission housing.
Electrical Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring fault, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the connector pigtail.
Potentiometer Replacement
If the wiring is intact but the sensor's signal is out of range, remove the mounting bolts for the R2 potentiometer and extract the sensor. Install the new OEM potentiometer, ensuring the rotary tang aligns correctly with the synchronizer shaft.
Mechanical Repair
If replacing the sensor does not resolve the out-of-range signal, the transmission will require internal mechanical inspection of the driveline to repair the jammed or damaged R2 synchronizer assembly.
Recalibration
After replacing the sensor or repairing the wiring, you must perform a Full Power Shift Transmission (FPS) calibration so the TCU can learn the new minimum and maximum voltage values for the R2 position.
