Challenger D127 – Instrument Cluster or Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel Gauge Issue
Issue description
The system has detected a problem related to the fuel gauge, resulting in an inaccurate, erratic, or non-moving fuel level reading. This is typically caused by a faulty fuel level sender (a variable resistor within the fuel pump module) failing to send the correct resistance value to the instrument cluster or Engine Control Module (ECM).
Applies to these machines
5 machines- 2010 Dodge Challenger
- 2012 Dodge Challenger
- 2020 Dodge Challenger
- Challenger RT
- Challenger SXT
Check the cause
Perform a gauge cluster reset (on older models, press and hold the odometer reset switch, turn ignition to 'ON', and allow the diagnostic cycle to run)
Visually inspect the wiring harness and grounding for the sender connector, ensuring they are free of corrosion
Use a scan tool to read live data from the fuel level sender, graphing the voltage while adding fuel to check for linear tracking
Visually inspect the fuel pump/sender module inside the tank to ensure insulator pads are not interfering with the float's travel and that the float moves freely
Repair steps
Access fuel tank
Remove the rear seat to access the fuel pump module, or lower the fuel tank depending on the specific model and component location.
Replace fuel level sender
Replace the faulty fuel level sender. If integrated, replace the entire fuel pump module assembly. Replace both primary and secondary senders if necessary.
Replace gasket
Install a new fuel pump module gasket whenever the sender or pump is serviced.
Re-calibrate system
Perform a re-calibration or re-learn procedure so the system recognizes the new component and provides accurate readings.
Road test
Perform a road test, ideally starting with a full tank of fuel, to confirm that the fuel gauge is reading accurately.
Parts you might need
(4)Fuel Level Sensor / Sending Unit
Most commonly cited replacement part; may include primary and secondary senders.
Fuel Pump Module / Assembly
Often includes the fuel level sender.
Fuel Pump Module Gasket
Recommended for replacement when the fuel pump module is serviced.
Instrument Cluster
Replace if the gauge itself within the cluster is determined to be faulty.
