CLAAS 7761h – ECM: Short-circuit of the electronic in the engine

Issue description

A critical electrical failure has been detected within the engine's control system, indicating an internal short circuit inside the main Engine Control Module (ECM). This fault can affect engine operation, leading to symptoms ranging from erratic behavior to a complete no-start condition. Common underlying causes include moisture intrusion leading to corrosion, voltage spikes, or the failure of internal electronic components.

Applies to these machines

  • Jaguar
  • Arion
  • Lexion
  • Avero

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the A015 ECM, its connectors, and the surrounding wiring harness for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, moisture intrusion, or burnt components

  2. Verify that the A015 module is receiving the correct voltage and has a solid ground connection, as poor grounding is a known cause of ECM issues

  3. Check the engine wiring harness for continuity and for shorts between wires or to the chassis ground, paying close attention to areas where wires may rub against the frame or engine components

  4. Disconnect sensors and actuators connected to the ECM one by one to see if the short circuit fault disappears, as a shorted external component (like a fuel solenoid) can cause the ECM to report an internal fault

  5. Use the official CLAAS Diagnostic System (CDS) to read all active and stored fault codes to identify if other codes point to the root cause

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery before starting any work on the electrical system.

  2. Locate and Remove the ECM

The A015 ECM is typically located in a protected position, often on the engine block or nearby on the chassis.

  3. Disconnect Connectors

Carefully release the locking tabs and disconnect the large multi-pin electrical connectors from the module.

  4. Unbolt the Module

Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECM to the machine.

  5. Send for Repair or Procure Replacement

Repair: Several third-party services specialize in repairing agricultural ECUs. This can be a cost-effective option that often does not require reprogramming. Replacement: If replacing the unit, a new or used module must be sourced. A new module may require programming to the specific machine using the CLAAS Diagnostic System (CDS).

  6. Installation

Install the repaired or replacement ECM by following the removal steps in reverse. Ensure all connectors are clean, dry, and securely fastened.

  7. Reconnect Power and Test

Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on. Check for any active fault codes and start the engine to verify that the repair was successful.
