CLAAS 7766h – ECM: Engine Electronic Short Circuit

Issue description

A short-circuit has been detected in an electronic component or circuit connected to the engine. This typically indicates a specific electrical problem, such as a short to ground or short to positive in a sensor or solenoid valve circuit, rather than a total system failure. This fault may affect the operation of the engine and is usually caused by damaged wiring, faulty connectors, or an internal component failure.

Applies to these machines

  • Avero
  • Arion
  • Axion
  • Jaguar
  • Xerion

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine's wiring harness for chafing, melting, or corrosion, especially near hot exhaust components or moving parts

  2. Inspect and clean all relevant connectors for moisture ingress, particularly CAN bus connectors, the main ECM (A15) connector, and engine sensor connectors

  3. Check all fuses related to the engine control system, as a short circuit often causes a blown fuse

  4. Use the CLAAS Diagnostic System (CDS) to scan for all active and logged fault codes from all modules to pinpoint the specific failing circuit and identify any communication errors

Repair steps

  1. Identify specific circuit

If a more specific fault code is present alongside 7766h, use it to identify the exact component or circuit that is failing (e.g., fuel pressure sensor short to ground).

  2. Isolate the component

Disconnect the suspect sensor or actuator from the wiring harness to isolate it from the rest of the circuit.

  3. Test the wiring

Use a multimeter to check for continuity and short circuits between the ECM connector and the component connector. Check for a short to ground (resistance between signal wire and chassis ground), short to positive (voltage on signal wire with key on), and open circuits.

  4. Test the component

If the wiring is confirmed to be good, test the component's resistance or electrical properties according to service manual specifications. Replace the component if it fails testing.

  5. Address CAN bus issues

If multiple random error codes are present, inspect and clean all major CAN bus junctions, as moisture in these connectors can cause erratic electrical faults.

  6. Replace ECM

As a last resort, if the fault persists after verifying wiring and replacing the associated component, the ECM may have an internal failure and require replacement.
