Deutz-Fahr 0: Voltage Too Low or Short to Ground

Issue description

The system has detected that a specific electronic component or sensor is reporting a voltage level below the acceptable range, or there is a short circuit to the battery's negative terminal (ground). This corresponds to a J1939 FMI 4 error, indicating the data is considered valid but has fallen outside normal operating parameters, which may affect the proper operation of the machine's electrical system.

Applies to these machines

  • Agrotron
  • Agrofarm
  • 5-series

Check the cause

  1. Check the battery voltage with a voltmeter (a fully charged 12-volt battery should read approximately 12.6 volts with the engine off).

  2. Start the tractor and check the alternator's output (should provide a voltage between 13.5 and 14.5 volts).

  3. Inspect the battery terminals and cables for corrosion, looseness, or damage.

  4. Check the main fuses and any relays associated with the electrical system for blown fuses or poor contacts.

  5. Visually inspect the wiring harnesses for any signs of damage, such as chafing, cuts, or melting.

  6. Disconnect, inspect, and reseat connectors to ensure a good connection, checking for corrosion, dirt, oil, or grease.

Repair steps

  1. Identify the faulty component

Use a diagnostic tool to read the specific Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) associated with the FMI 4 code to pinpoint the exact component. If a tool is unavailable, consult a wiring diagram for your specific tractor model to trace the circuit.

  2. Test the component's circuit

With the key on, use a multimeter to check for the correct voltage at the component's power supply pin. Ensure the component has a good ground connection by checking for continuity between the ground pin and the chassis. If it is a sensor, measure the voltage on the signal wire to see if it is within the expected range.

  3. Isolate the fault

If there is no power to the component, the issue is upstream (e.g., broken wire, blown fuse, or faulty relay). If power and ground are good, the component itself may be faulty. Also, check for a short circuit to ground on the signal wire.

  4. Repair or replace

Repair any damaged wiring or connectors found during testing. If a component is determined to be faulty, replace it with a genuine OEM part.

  5. Clear fault codes

After the repair is complete, clear the fault codes from the ECU's memory and run the tractor to ensure the fault does not return.

Parts you might need

(5)
  • Battery

Replace if failing to hold a 12.6V charge

  • Alternator

Replace if output is outside the 13.5-14.5V range

  • Relays

Main power relays or relays for specific components

  • Sensors

Various sensors (pressure, temperature, speed) depending on the specific SPN identified

  • Wiring Harnesses or Connectors

Replace or repair damaged sections as needed
