Deutz-Fahr 0 – ECU: Unusual Signal Frequency or Pulse
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECU) has detected data from a sensor that is structurally valid in voltage but operates outside the normal working range in terms of frequency, pulse width, or period. This indicates an irregularity in the signal or timing of the component. Because the timing and frequency of these signals are critical for engine management, the ECU flags this as a fault. This logic corresponds to SAE J1939 FMI 8 and most commonly affects the accelerator pedal position sensor (SPN 91) or engine speed sensors (SPN 190).
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Deutz 1011 series engines
- Deutz 2011 series engines
- Deutz TCD 3.6 L4 series engines
Check the cause
(Accelerator Pedal cause - SPN 91) Visually inspect the accelerator pedal assembly, connector, and wiring harness to the ECU for physical damage, corrosion, abrasion, or pinch points.
(Accelerator Pedal cause - SPN 91) Disconnect and inspect the pins and sockets of the pedal and ECU connectors. Test signal wire continuity and measure supply voltage at the connector with the ignition on (engine off).
(Engine Speed Sensor cause - SPN 190) Check the crankshaft and camshaft sensors for physical damage, and inspect wiring for improper routing near high-voltage cables that could cause electrical noise.
(Engine Speed Sensor cause - SPN 190) Inspect the tone ring (sensor wheel) for bent or missing teeth, dirt, or debris. Verify it is installed correctly, not loose, and check the sensor air gap.
(Engine Speed Sensor cause - SPN 190) Using a multimeter or oscilloscope, check the sensor's output signal waveform while cranking the engine to identify missing or erratic pulses.
Repair steps
Clean and secure connections
Clean the affected sensor, tone ring, and connectors. Ensure all pins and sockets are tight, secure, and free of moisture or corrosion.
Repair wiring harness
If wiring damage, breaks, shorts, or corrosion are found during continuity testing, repair or replace the affected section of the harness. Ensure all connections are secure and sealed.
Adjust sensor gap (SPN 190 cause)
If diagnosing an engine speed sensor fault and the tone wheel is misaligned or the sensor air gap is incorrect, adjust them according to the manufacturer's service manual specifications.
Replace faulty sensor
If wiring is confirmed good but the sensor fails signal/voltage tests, replace the accelerator pedal position sensor, crankshaft speed sensor, or camshaft speed sensor depending on the specific SPN.
Reset ECU and verify
Switch the ignition off and wait for the main relay to click off before switching it back on. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code and perform a test run to ensure throttle response and engine running are normal.
