Deutz-Fahr 0 – ECU: Data Valid but Above Normal Operational Range

Issue description

This is a generic J1939 Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) code indicating that the Engine ECU is receiving a sensor signal that is technically valid but exceeds the expected normal operating parameters for the current conditions. It does not point to a single specific failure; rather, it requires an accompanying Suspect Parameter Number (SPN), such as SPN 100 (Engine Oil Pressure) or SPN 84 (Vehicle Speed), to identify the specific affected circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Agrotron K90
  • Agrotron K100
  • Agrotron K110
  • Agrotron K120

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness for any short circuits or breaks in the relevant sensor circuit

  2. Inspect the affected component for any signs of damage or maintenance needs

  3. Reset the ECU by turning off the ignition, waiting for power down, and turning it back on to verify if the fault remains active

  4. If accompanied by SPN 100 (Engine Oil Pressure): Verify actual oil pressure with a manual gauge, inspect the sensor for leaks, and check the oil pump and relief valve

  5. If accompanied by SPN 84 (Vehicle Speed): Inspect the speed sensor and wiring for damage or corrosion, and verify ECU calibration settings

Repair steps

  1. Check active codes (For SPN 100)

Connect a diagnostic tool to check for active fault codes. If SPN 100/FMI 3 or FMI 4 are also present, diagnose those first.

  2. Test oil pressure sensor voltage (For SPN 100)

With the ignition on but the engine off, check the voltage of the engine oil pressure sensor.

  3. Replace sensor if voltage out of spec (For SPN 100)

If the voltage is out of specification, replace the engine oil pressure sensor.

  4. Install manual gauge (For SPN 100)

If the voltage is within specification, install a manual oil pressure gauge.

  5. Compare readings (For SPN 100)

Start the engine and compare the manual gauge reading to the sensor reading on the diagnostic tool.

  6. Replace sensor if readings mismatch (For SPN 100)

If the readings do not match, the sensor is likely faulty and should be replaced.

  7. Inspect mechanical components (For SPN 100)

If the readings match and are high, the issue may be with the oil pump or pressure relief valve, which will require further mechanical inspection and potential replacement.

  8. Inspect speed sensor (For SPN 84)

Inspect the vehicle speed sensor for any physical damage and ensure it is securely mounted.

  9. Examine wiring harness (For SPN 84)

Examine the wiring harness connected to the sensor for any signs of damage, chafing, or corrosion.

  10. Check electrical connector (For SPN 84)

Check the electrical connector for a secure fit and any corrosion on the pins.

  11. Test speed sensor reading (For SPN 84)

If a diagnostic tool is available, check the vehicle speed reading from the sensor to see if it is erratic or incorrect.

  12. Replace faulty components (For SPN 84)

If the sensor or wiring is found to be faulty, replace the affected component.
