Deutz-Fahr 299 – EMR4: Wastegate Actuator CAN Timeout

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (EMR4) has failed to receive an expected status message from the electronic wastegate actuator over the CAN bus within a specified time. This indicates a communication breakdown or a failure of the actuator's internal electronics, preventing the ECU from controlling and verifying the turbocharger's boost pressure correctly.

Applies to these machines

  • TCD 3.6
  • TCD 2013

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EMR4 ECU and the electronic wastegate actuator for chafing, corrosion, bent pins, loose connections, or water intrusion.

  2. Verify the wastegate actuator is receiving the correct voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  3. Check the integrity of the CAN bus wiring for damage or shorts in the network wiring leading to the actuator.

  4. With the engine off and cool, manually check the movement of the wastegate actuator rod and the lever on the turbocharger. It should move smoothly without binding (a seized lever can cause actuator motor failure).

  5. Use a diagnostic scan tool to check for other active fault codes (especially related to power supply or CAN bus) and attempt to command the actuator's position to compare it with the actual reported position.

Repair steps

  1. Ensure Safety

Turn the machine off, remove the key, and allow the engine and turbocharger assembly to cool down completely.

  2. Access the Actuator

Locate the electronic wastegate actuator mounted on the side of the turbocharger assembly. It will have an electrical connector and a control rod attached to a lever on the turbo housing.

  3. Disconnect

Carefully unplug the electrical connector. Remove the clip or nut securing the actuator's control rod to the wastegate lever.

  4. Remove the Actuator

Unbolt the mounting screws that hold the actuator to its bracket on the turbocharger.

  5. Install the New Actuator

Mount the new actuator onto the bracket and tighten the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

  6. Connect and Calibrate

Reconnect the control rod to the wastegate lever and secure it. Plug in the electrical connector. Note: A new electronic actuator may require a calibration procedure using a compatible diagnostic tool to teach the ECU the new actuator's start and end positions. Refer to the specific service manual for the machine or engine for this procedure.

  7. Clear Faults and Test

After installation, use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code from the EMR4 ECU. Start the engine and let it idle, listening for any unusual noises. Re-check for any active fault codes. If possible, operate the machine under load to verify that the turbo boost is functioning correctly and the fault code does not return.
