Deutz-Fahr 474 – Engine ECU: Fuel Pre-Pressure Too Low

Issue description

The fuel pre-pressure in the low-pressure side of the fuel system (before the high-pressure pump) has dropped below the acceptable warning threshold. This condition can starve the high-pressure pump, leading to poor engine performance, difficulty starting, and potential damage to the injection system.

Applies to these machines

  • TCD 2.9
  • TCD 3.6
  • TCD 6.1
  • TCD 2012
  • TCD 2013
  • D4506
  • 912 Series
  • 913 Series
  • D Series
  • DX Series
  • BF4M1013
  • BF6M1013

Check the cause

  1. Verify fuel level to ensure the tank is not empty and the fuel gauge is accurate

  2. Visually inspect the entire fuel system for leaks, cracks, kinks, or physical damage

  3. Check electrical connections to the fuel pump and sensors for corrosion or looseness

  4. Look for air bubbles in clear sections of the fuel line or at the fuel filter housing

  5. Inspect primary and secondary fuel filters for clogs or contamination (water, dirt, algae)

  6. Scan for related fault codes (such as SPN 94) to verify the ECU's fault identification

Repair steps

  1. Replace fuel filters

Park the machine on level ground and turn off the engine. Place a drain pan under the filter housing, release pressure or drain the housing, and remove old filter elements and O-rings. Clean the filter housings. Pre-fill the new secondary filter with clean diesel fuel. Install new filters with lightly lubricated O-rings. Do not overtighten.

  2. Prime the fuel system

Pump the manual priming plunger on top of the filter housing 50-100 times until it becomes firm. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  3. Test the fuel lift pump

Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the low-pressure circuit (inlet of secondary filter or high-pressure pump). Pressure should be 40-80 PSI; readings below 5-15 PSI indicate failure. Perform a volume test by measuring flow into a container. For electric pumps, verify power, ground, relays, and breakers.

  4. Inspect fuel pressure sensor

Locate the sensor near the fuel filter housing. Inspect wiring and connectors. Test output with a multimeter or compare scanner readings to a manual pressure gauge.

  5. Check for complex restrictions

If the issue persists, inspect for a stuck-open pressure relief valve or a restriction in the fuel tank pickup tube.
