Deutz-Fahr 486 – TCU: Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor Voltage High

Issue description

The transmission control unit (TCU) has detected an electrical issue with the gearbox oil temperature sensor, specifically a voltage signal that is higher than the expected normal range (FMI 3). This indicates either a short circuit to a positive battery voltage source or an open circuit/cable break in the sensor's ground line. This fault can affect the proper operation of the transmission system and its electrical circuits.

Applies to these machines

  • Agrotron
  • Agrotron TTV
  • 5 Series
  • 6 Series
  • 7 Series

Check the cause

  1. Perform a cold-start check: turn the ignition on without starting a completely cold machine. If the fault appears immediately, it confirms an electrical failure rather than an actual transmission overheating issue

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission oil temperature sensor for chafing, melting, pinched wires, or corrosion

  3. Disconnect the sensor harness and inspect both connectors for moisture, dirt, or damaged pins. Clean and re-seat the connection

  4. Test the wiring harness for a short to power: with the sensor disconnected and ignition on, measure voltage between harness pins and chassis ground. The signal wire should read low/zero; battery or reference voltage indicates a short

  5. Test the wiring harness for an open ground: check for continuity between the ground pin on the harness connector and chassis ground

  6. Test the sensor resistance: measure Ohms across the disconnected sensor terminals. Infinite resistance (open circuit) or near-zero resistance (short circuit) indicates a faulty sensor

Repair steps

  1. Ensure safety and locate sensor

Park the machine on level ground, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery. Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing or valve body.

  2. Repair wiring harness

If diagnostic tests revealed a short circuit or open wire, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness. Ensure all connections are secure, insulated, and protected from heat and abrasion.

  3. Replace the transmission oil temperature sensor

If the sensor failed the resistance test, place a drain pan underneath, unscrew the old sensor, and install the new sensor with a new sealing washer. Tighten to manufacturer specifications and reconnect the harness.

  4. Clear fault and verify repair

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool. Start the machine, allow it to reach operating temperature, monitor transmission temperature data, and top up transmission fluid as necessary.
