Deutz-Fahr I36 – Instrument Panel (Instrument ECU): Relay short circuit (preheating function)

Issue description

Relay shorting or feedback - wire connected to power input instead of output (Pre-heating function). The system is detecting voltage on the preheating circuit when it should not be present, indicating either an internally shorted relay that is stuck closed, or a wiring fault where the output circuit is shorted directly to a 12V power source.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Wiring Orientation: Check if any recent repairs or jump-starts were performed. Ensure the heavy-gauge battery supply wire and the output wire to the preheating element are not swapped or bridged at the relay terminals.

  2. Test for Internal Relay Short: Disconnect the preheating relay. Using a multimeter, check for continuity across the high-current load terminals (input from battery and output to glow plugs/thermostarter). If there is continuity while the relay is de-energized, the internal contacts have welded shut.

  3. Check for Harness Shorts: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Instrument ECU to the relay control circuit. Look for rubbed insulation causing a short to voltage (Vdc).

  4. Inspect the Preheating Element: Check the resistance of the preheating element for a dead short before installing a new relay to prevent immediate failure of the replacement part.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable. The preheating circuit carries very high amperage, making it a severe fire and shock hazard if accidentally grounded.

  2. Locate the Relay

    Locate the preheating/thermostarter relay, which is typically mounted on the firewall in the engine compartment or inside the main high-current fuse box.

  3. Remove and Inspect

    Unbolt the heavy-gauge wires and unplug the control connector. Inspect the plastic housing of the relay and the wire ring terminals for signs of melting, scorching, or arcing.

  4. Replace the Relay

    If the relay failed the continuity test or shows heat damage, install a new OEM preheating relay.

  5. Reconnect Wiring

    Carefully reconnect the wiring, ensuring the 12V supply from the battery goes to the designated input terminal and the wire leading to the engine preheater goes to the output terminal. Tighten the retaining nuts to the specified torque to prevent high-resistance arcing.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the 'ON' position to trigger the preheating function. Verify that the preheating indicator illuminates and turns off normally, and that the I36 code does not return.
