M106

Deutz-Fahr M106 – Engine ECU (EMR - Deutz Engine Management): CAN-BUS Timeout / CAN-BUS Fehler

Issue description

Indicates a communication error where the engine protection or main control messages have timed out. Expected messages are missing or corrupted, causing the machine to protect itself, which often results in an engine derate, hydraulic lockout, or a complete no-start condition.

Applies to these machines

  • Series 5
  • Nitro
  • Virtus

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN wiring harness for chafed wiring, crushed sections, water ingress, or corroded connectors

  2. Check for a weak battery, voltage drops during cranking, or poor/shared grounding at the ECU

  3. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across CAN High and CAN Low (should typically read 60 ohms)

  4. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as Deutz SerDia 4.0 or Jaltest) to read the ECU data stream and verify if the ECU is transmitting

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery before servicing the ECU or wiring harness.

  2. Repair the Physical Layer

If diagnostic checks reveal chafed wires or corroded pins at the ECU connector, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved splice kits or replace the damaged connector pins.

  3. Restore Power/Ground

Clean all main chassis grounds and ECU ground terminals to ensure stable voltage supply to the EMR module.

  4. ECU Replacement (If Necessary)

If the wiring, termination, and power/ground are all perfectly intact but the ECU fails to communicate or process CAN messages, the EMR module itself has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.

  5. Reset and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Use the Deutz SerDia or Jaltest diagnostic software to clear the M106 fault code. Cycle the ignition off, wait for the ECU to fully shut down, and turn it back on to verify the code does not return.
