Deutz-Fahr M159 – Engine ECU (EMR): Injector Cylinder 1: Short circuit to +12V (Short circuit to battery)

Issue description

The engine control module has detected an abnormally high voltage on the control circuit for the fuel injector on cylinder #1, indicating a short circuit to the battery (+12V).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and Injector #1 for chafed wires shorting against a power source or bare metal.

  2. Check the main injector harness connector (often a 14-pin connector on the valve cover) and the specific connector at Injector #1 for bent pins, spread pins, or signs of water/oil intrusion.

  3. Perform a multimeter resistance test on the injector coil by disconnecting the electrical connector at Injector #1 and probing the terminals (should read 0.4–2.0 ohms). A reading of zero indicates an internal short.

  4. Perform a harness continuity test with the ECU and injector disconnected to check the injector signal wire for continuity to a +12V power source.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical damage during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring/Connectors (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed water intrusion or a chafed wire shorting to +12V, clean the connectors with electrical contact cleaner, replace damaged pins, or splice/loom the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Replace the Injector (If Internally Shorted)

    Remove the valve cover/injector access components as dictated by the specific engine model. Remove the high-pressure fuel line to Injector #1 (cap all fuel fittings immediately to prevent contamination). Remove the injector hold-down clamp and extract the shorted injector. Clean the injector bore and install the new injector with a new O-ring/copper sealing washer. Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and electrical connector.

  4. ECU Reset

    Reconnect the battery. Switch the ignition ON, wait for the ECU to power up, switch it OFF, and wait for the ECU to fully shut down. Switch the ignition back ON to reset the module.

  5. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as Deutz SerDia or Jaltest) to clear the M159 / SPN 651 fault code from the EMR memory. Run the engine to verify the misfire is gone and the code does not return.
