Deutz-Fahr M22 – Engine ECU (EMR4): ECU 12V Supply Voltage

Issue description

The battery voltage supplied to the engine controller is out of bounds. Depending on the specific Failure Mode Identifier (FMI), the battery voltage is either too high, too low, or the high battery voltage emergency threshold has been exceeded.

Check the cause

  1. Measure the static battery voltage with a multimeter to ensure it is holding a proper 12V charge

  2. Test alternator output by measuring voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running (below 12V indicates undercharging; above 14.5V-15V indicates overcharging)

  3. Inspect the main power supply cables running from the battery/alternator to the EMR4 ECU for broken cables, short circuits to ground, or corroded pins

  4. Check the main engine power supply relays (e.g., RL40) and ECU fuses for excessive resistance, melting, or poor contact

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable before performing any electrical repairs to prevent short circuits.

  2. Clean Connections

    Clean the battery terminals, chassis ground points, and the EMR4 ECU harness connectors with electrical contact cleaner. Ensure all connections are tight.

  3. Replace the Alternator

    If diagnostic checks revealed voltage spikes or inadequate charging, remove the drive belt, disconnect the B+ and D+ terminals, and unbolt the faulty alternator. Install the replacement alternator, tension the belt to specification, and reconnect the wiring.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If a short or break was found in the ECU supply line, splice in a new section of wire using weatherproof heat-shrink connectors, or replace the damaged harness section.

  5. Replace Faulty Relays

    Swap out any sticking or burnt main power relays in the fuse box.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic tool (such as SerDia or Jaltest) to clear the M22 fault code from the EMR4 memory. Run the engine to verify the voltage remains within the normal 12V–14V operating range.
