Deutz-Fahr M223 – Engine ECU (EMR - Engine Management Regulator): Starter Relay: Short circuit to +12V
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit has detected that the voltage on the starter relay's high-side power stage is too high, or the current drain measured by the ECU is above the target range, pointing directly to a short circuit to the battery voltage (+Ubatt).
Applies to these machines
2 machines- Deutz-Fahr Series 5
- Deutz-Fahr Series 5D VSF CVT Tier 4i
Check the cause
Inspect the connection cables between the Engine ECU and the starter relay for a short circuit to +12V or cable breaks (check ECU wiring pins such as A20 or A24 depending on the model)
Test the starter relay for internal damage, overheating, or a dead short
Check the system's working voltage to ensure it is not abnormally high
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the high-current starter circuit.
Examine and Repair Cabling
Trace the wiring from the starter relay back to the Engine ECU. If the connection cable is chafed, melted, or shorting to a power source, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.
Replace the Relay
If the wiring is intact but the relay fails a bench test (or shows signs of an internal short/overheating), replace the starter relay.
Reset the ECU
Reconnect the battery. Reset the Engine ECU by switching the ignition OFF, waiting until the ECU has completely shut down, and then switching the ignition ON again.
Verify
Check if the M223 error is still active. (Note: If the error cannot be cleared and all external cabling/relays test perfectly, the ECU itself may have suffered internal power stage damage and require replacement).
