Deutz-Fahr M71 – Engine ECU (EMR): Exhaust gas recirculation faulty

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the EGR valve is either mechanically stuck, failing to reach its commanded position, or suffering from an internal electrical/device fault.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the EGR valve and the Engine ECU for continuity and shorts (specifically check pins 44, 82, and 85 of ECU connector M003, and pins 19 and 20 of ECU connector M004)

   Check the EGR valve for heavy soot buildup or dust particles that could cause it to stick mechanically

   Cycle the ignition key (Off for 40 seconds, then On) to see if the ECU can relearn the EGR valve's opening/closing position memory, and check if the position reading is out of tolerance compared to the setpoint value

   Clean the Valve

   If the valve is dirty or stuck, remove it and clean the passages.

   Warm-Up Test

   Reinstall the cleaned valve, run the engine, and raise the coolant temperature above 60°C.

   ECU Relearn

   Turn off the engine and wait for 40 seconds so the ECU can memorize the new learning procedure. Turn the ignition key back to 'On' and check if the M71 error returns.

   Replace the Valve

   If the wiring is intact, cleaning does not resolve the issue, or the valve is physically damaged/cracked, the EGR valve must be replaced.
