Deutz-Fahr T65 – Shuttle ECU: Clutch pedal potentiometer disconnected or short circuit to GND

Issue description

The control unit has detected that the signal from the clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer) has dropped out completely (disconnected) or the signal wire is shorting directly to a ground source. This prevents the tractor from knowing the exact physical position of the clutch pedal, which is critical for electronic transmission management and hydraulic shuttle operation.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the clutch pedal potentiometer and its electrical connector for loose pins, corrosion, or physical damage.

  2. Trace the wiring from the clutch pedal potentiometer back to the Shuttle ECU, looking for chafed wires shorting to ground or broken wires causing an open circuit.

  3. Verify that the sensor is receiving its required 5V reference power supply from the ECU.

  4. Monitor the clutch pedal potentiometer signal voltage using a multimeter or diagnostic software; the voltage should sweep smoothly as the pedal is depressed (a constant 0V indicates a short to ground or a dead sensor).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Removal

    Locate the clutch pedal potentiometer on the clutch pedal pivot assembly. Disconnect the wiring harness connector. Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the sensor to the bracket and slide the old sensor off the linkage.

  3. Installation

    Install the new potentiometer onto the linkage, ensuring the mechanical tangs/slots align correctly with the pedal pivot so the sensor sweeps accurately. Secure the mounting hardware.

  4. Reconnection

    Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor and reconnect the tractor's battery.

  5. Calibration

    A new clutch pedal potentiometer must be calibrated to the Shuttle ECU so the computer learns the new 'fully released' and 'fully depressed' voltage values. This is done via the tractor's internal diagnostic menu (Main Menu -> Test -> Transmission -> Calibrations) or using the Deutz-Fahr diagnostic software tool.
