04.1.28

Fendt 04.1.28 – Transmission Control Unit: A009 - Transmission control unit, F/R incremental encoder - Signal fault / Faulty path signal

Issue description

The A009 Actuator Unit is responsible for physically moving the actuator shaft to change the transmission ratio in the Vario ML transmission. This fault code triggers when the system loses the path signal from the internal incremental encoder, meaning the tractor no longer knows the precise position of the transmission actuator. The tractor will typically restrict functionality, though continuation in emergency mode (Auxiliary Operation) is usually possible.

Check the cause

  1. Check Variotronic TI Diagnostics (Menu 1) to compare IDEAL, VE, and REAL values; a missing or erratic VE value confirms a faulty encoder

  2. Engage mechanical emergency operation mode to verify the transmission control linkage runs smoothly without binding

  3. Inspect the mechanical connection between the A009 actuator unit and the transmission actuator shaft

  4. Inspect the X037 electrical separation point (main connector on the A009 unit) for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the handbrake, and turn the ignition OFF.

  2. Locate actuator unit

The A009 actuator unit is located on the right side of the transmission housing.

  3. Remove wheel

Remove the right rear wheel to gain proper access to the transmission housing.

  4. Remove cover

Remove the protective metal panel covering the actuator unit.

  5. Disconnect wiring

Disconnect the X037 electrical separation point from the A009 actuator unit.

  6. Remove actuator unit

Unbolt the A009 actuator unit from its mounting and carefully disconnect it from the transmission actuator shaft.

  7. Install new actuator unit

Install the new (or remanufactured) A009 actuator unit, ensuring the mechanical connection to the actuator shaft is secure.

  8. Reconnect wiring

    Reconnect the X037 electrical connector.

  9. Reinstall components

Reinstall the metal cover panel and the right rear wheel.

  10. Calibrate transmission

Turn the ignition ON. Perform a key reset (ignition OFF/ON) and clear previous fault-generated calibration exits. Run the transmission calibration procedure (often calibration code 4007) to teach the new unit its end stops.
