04.1.A4

Fendt 04.1.A4 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Actuator Unit (A009): Fault or logical error in EST signal

Issue description

Fault or logical error in EST signal (Adjuster EST track signal faulty/missing). The tractor will restrict functionality, but continuation in emergency mode is possible (auxiliary operation) at reduced speeds.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the A009 actuator unit for corrosion, chafing, or loose pins that could interrupt the EST signal

  2. Check the ease of movement of the transmission adjustment device using the emergency control system to ensure the actuator isn't binding mechanically

  3. Access the diagnostic menu (Diagnose 1) on the tractor terminal and compare the IDEAL/VE (specified adjustment angle of the A009 unit) against the REAL (actual transmission adjustment read by the B014 accumulator shaft sensor). If values do not match or the bar indicator fails to register the programmed change of direction, the actuator is failing to process or execute the EST signal.

Repair steps

  1. Engage Emergency Mode

If the tractor is stranded, use the emergency operation mode to safely move the tractor to a clean workshop environment.

  2. Inspect Wiring

Thoroughly test the CAN-bus and EST signal wires running to the A009 unit. Repair any damaged wiring. If the wiring is intact, the A009 actuator unit itself has failed internally.

  3. Access the Transmission Control Block

Locate the A009 actuator unit on the Vario transmission control block.

  4. Replace the Actuator

Remove the retaining hardware and carefully extract the faulty A009 actuator unit. Install the new OEM actuator unit, ensuring all seals and mating surfaces are clean to prevent hydraulic contamination.

  5. Calibration / Teach-In

After replacement, connect the FENDIAS diagnostic tool. You must perform an EOL (End of Line) programming or Teach-In procedure to calibrate the new actuator's zero position and reference points so the ECU can accurately control the transmission ratio.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Clear the 04.1.A4 fault code from the memory and test drive the tractor to ensure smooth forward-to-reverse shuttling and proper speed adjustment.
