Fendt 1.2.1F – Engine Control Unit (EDC): CAN message fault: connection failure between the engine control module and the connected electrical system

Issue description

The communication link (CAN bus) between the Engine Control Unit (EDC) and the transmission bus or EST (Enhanced Control Module) has been interrupted. When this code is triggered, the tractor typically defaults to "Auxiliary operation" (limp mode), which may result in reduced engine power and the loss of enhanced features (e.g., only the foot throttle will be available).

Check the cause

  1. Check the CAN bus communication lines between the EDC control module (A021) and the transmission bus / EST control module for line discontinuity or shorts.

  2. Verify the power supply and ground connections to the EDC control unit (e.g., Connector X692 for UB 30).

  3. Inspect the main harness connectors at the EDC for pushed-out pins, moisture ingress, or corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the EDC Control Unit (A021)

    On models like the Favorit 900, the EDC is located inside the cab on the right mudguard. You will need to remove the interior cover panels to access it.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery before probing or repairing the electrical system.

  3. Inspect and Clean Connectors

    Disconnect the main plugs (typically X047 and X048) at the EDC box. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and check for damaged pins.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If a break or high resistance is found in the CAN bus wiring during your continuity test, repair the damaged section using an approved AMP Superseal or Minitimer repair harness.

  5. Test the System

    Reconnect the modules and battery, turn the ignition on, and check if the 1.2.1F code clears.

  6. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

    If the wiring harness and power supplies are 100% intact but the CAN communication remains dead, the EDC control unit itself has likely suffered an internal failure. Replace the EDC unit. Note: A new EDC unit will require EOL (End of Line) reprogramming via FENDIAS / SERDIA dealer software to match the engine configuration to the tractor.
