Fendt 1.2.B1 – Engine Control Module (EDC): EDC CAN message fault

Issue description

CAN communication failure or timeout between the Engine Control Module (EDC) and the Pump Control Unit (Injection Pump). The system detects that the CAN signal from the EDC Control Module to the Pump Control Module has failed. This condition typically results in restricted or reduced engine power, with maximum speed often reduced to 2000 RPM and torque reduced by 25-40%.

Check the cause

  1. Check for wiring discontinuities, broken wires, or short circuits in the CAN bus harness between the EDC Control Module (A021) and the Pump Control Module (A020). Refer to the 'EDC control' circuit diagram for pinout specifics.

  2. Connect the FENDIAS diagnostic tool to record failure and ambient parameters.

  3. Delete the failure code memory using FENDIAS and cycle the system to see if the fault code returns. Fendt documentation explicitly states that before replacing any pump or control module, failure codes must be analyzed, deleted, and re-checked.

  4. Check for accompanying codes that might indicate a power supply issue to the pump (e.g., 1.2.B3) or an internal pump failure (e.g., 1.2.B2). Address codes that do not require module replacement first.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery power

    Disconnect battery power before servicing the EDC or injection pump wiring.

  2. Repair or replace wiring

    Repair or replace any damaged sections of the CAN bus wiring harness or connectors between the A021 EDC module and the A020 Pump Control Unit.

  3. Clear fault codes

    Reconnect battery power and use FENDIAS to clear the fault codes.

  4. Verify communication

    Run the tractor to verify if the CAN communication is restored.

  5. Identify faulty module

    If the wiring is fully intact and the fault persists, the failure lies within either the EDC Control Module (A021) or the Injection Pump Control Module (A020).

  6. Replace faulty module

    Replace the faulty module (Injection Pump or EDC) based on secondary diagnostic tests. Note: On many of these systems, the pump control module is an integrated part of the injection pump and cannot be replaced separately; the entire injection pump must be replaced.

  7. Perform EOL programming

    Perform any necessary EOL (End of Line) programming or calibration for the new module using FENDIAS.
