1.2.B8

Fendt 1.2.B8 – A051 Engine Control Unit (Bosch EDC 7): A051 - ECU, engine control unit (EDC 7) CAN-message missing

Issue description

The tractor's CAN bus network has lost communication with the engine control unit. The main tractor controllers (like the A050 Basic Control Unit or A002 Enhanced Control Unit) are no longer receiving the expected data packets from the engine module.

Check the cause

  1. Wiring & Harness Inspection: Refer to the tractor's specific circuit diagram (specifically "Sheet 36 - EDC engine control"). Trace the CAN bus lines between the A051 Engine ECU and the A050/A002 control units.

  2. Connector Checks: Inspect the main separation points at the A051 ECU (connectors X1466, X1671, and X1672) for pushed pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  3. Power & Ground: Verify that the EDC 7 module is receiving proper operating voltage (12V) and has a solid ground connection. A loss of power to the ECU will also cause a "CAN-message missing" fault.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the battery before working on the tractor's sensitive CAN bus or EDC electrical systems.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken CAN wire, short circuit, or corroded connector pin, repair the harness using OEM-approved wiring repair techniques.

  3. ECU Repair/Replacement

If the wiring harness and power supplies test perfectly, the Bosch EDC 7 unit itself has likely suffered an internal hardware or software failure (a known issue with these modules). You must either send the unit to an agricultural electronics specialist for internal repair or replace it entirely.

  4. Reinstallation & EOL Programming

Install the repaired or new ECU. If a new or donor ECU is installed, you must perform EOL (End of Line) programming using the Fendt SERDIA diagnostic software to write the correct engine parameter data record for your specific chassis.

  5. Clear the Fault Code

Fendt documentation explicitly states that 1.2.xx series EDC errors cannot be cleared via the tractor dashboard. You must connect a laptop with the SERDIA diagnostic software and manually delete the error (FC:0078) from the engine control unit's memory to restore full functionality.
