4.1.72

Fendt 4.1.72 – Transmission Control Module: S017 - 'Transmission oil filter clogged' switch — Signal fault

Issue description

This fault code indicates a signal failure (such as an open circuit, short circuit, or defective sensor) originating from the S017 filter contamination switch. Because of this signal loss, the tractor's computer can no longer monitor the transmission oil filter for clogging. If ignored, this condition can lead to oil overheating and severe transmission damage, as the operator will not be warned if the filter becomes restricted.

Check the cause

  1. Check transmission oil temperature (must be above 50°C to accurately test the switch's live function)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the S017 switch for line discontinuities, corrosion, or short circuits

  3. Physically inspect the transmission oil filter for heavy contamination or being overdue for a change

Repair steps

  1. Warm Up the Machine

Run the tractor until the transmission oil temperature exceeds 50°C.

  2. Test the Circuit

Disconnect the S017 switch and use a multimeter to check for continuity and proper voltage on the signal wire going back to the Transmission Control Module.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If a break or short is found in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring.

  4. Replace the Switch

If the wiring tests good but the signal fault persists, the S017 switch itself has failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Replace the Filter

If the transmission oil filter is clogged, drain the necessary fluid, remove the old filter, and install a new OEM transmission oil filter.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Top off the transmission fluid if any was lost, clear the fault codes via the tractor's terminal, and test drive the machine to ensure the code does not return.
