4.1.A3

Fendt 4.1.A3 – Transmission Control Unit (A050 Basic Control ECU): A009 - Actuator unit: Fault or logic error in incremental sensor signal (actual position signal)

Issue description

The A009 actuator unit contains an internal increment sensor that reports the exact physical position of the transmission ratio back to the computer. Code 4.1.A3 triggers when the signal from this incremental sensor is missing, illogical, or out of range, meaning the tractor no longer knows the exact position of the transmission actuator. Normal transmission control is disabled, but continuation in emergency mode is usually possible.

Check the cause

  1. Mechanical Verification: Put the tractor into emergency mode and use the emergency control system (socket wrench actuation) to manually adjust the transmission. Check for smooth adjustment action. If the adjustment is physically binding, the issue may be mechanical within the transmission rather than the sensor.

  2. Wiring and Circuit Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the A009 actuator unit and the A050 Basic Control ECU. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or poor pin fitment that could distort the incremental sensor's signal.

  3. Reference Point Check: Cycle the ignition (Key OFF, then ON). Listen/feel if the A009 actuator unit attempts to find its initial reference point (the neutral position between forward and reverse). If it cannot find neutral, the sensor is completely blind.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the handbrake, and turn the ignition OFF.

  2. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness from the A009 actuator unit. Unbolt and remove the faulty A009 actuator unit from the side of the ML transmission housing.

  3. Installation

Install the new A009 actuator unit and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  4. Calibration

Initiate the transmission calibration procedure via the tractor's terminal (e.g., Calibration Code 4007 for the actuator unit). Ensure the transmission is in 'ACTIVE STANDSTILL' or neutral during this process. Note: If a previous calibration failed due to the fault, you must perform a 'Key reset' (Ignition OFF, wait, Ignition ON) before attempting the new calibration, or the ECU will reject it.

  5. Testing

Clear the 4.1.A3 fault code and test drive the tractor to ensure normal transmission operation and TMS (Tractor Management System) functionality are restored.
