Issue description

The potentiometer (rotary dial) used to adjust the position/draft (traction) mix for the front Electronic Power Control (front linkage/power lift) is sending an invalid, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal. The system terminates and locks up the front EPC control for safety, meaning raising and lowering the front power lift will only be possible via the external pushbuttons.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness and the connector at the back of the position/traction rotary control (located on the right-hand armrest/side console) for breaks, pinched wires, or corrosion.

  2. Verify that the potentiometer is receiving its reference voltage (typically 5V to 9.5V depending on the exact circuit, supplied via the ECU/fuse board).

  3. Using a multimeter, test the signal wire from the potentiometer while slowly turning the dial. The voltage/resistance should scale smoothly without any dropouts, spikes, or dead spots. If the signal drops to 0 or goes out of range during the sweep, the potentiometer has internally failed.

  4. Look for related cascading codes (e.g., 9.3.17 for battery supply voltage >18V) which might indicate a broader electrical or alternator issue rather than a localized sensor failure.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Console

    Carefully remove the retaining screws to open the right-hand armrest or side console where the front EPC rotary controls are housed.

  3. Remove the Faulty Component

    Locate the specific rotary control for the front position/traction mix. Disconnect its electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or locking clips holding the rotary control in place and pull it free from the console panel.

  4. Install the New Component

    Insert the new rotary control potentiometer into the console, secure it with the retaining hardware, and plug in the electrical connector.

  5. Reassemble

    Carefully close and secure the armrest/console panel, ensuring no wires are pinched.

  6. Reconnect Power

    Reconnect the tractor's battery.

  7. Clear Fault Codes

    Turn the ignition on. Clear the stored fault codes using the tractor's Varioterminal (on many Vario models, pressing keys D, B, and C simultaneously deletes all fault codes in the memory, or use the FENDIAS diagnostic tool).

  8. Calibration

    You must calibrate the new front EPC controls so the ECU learns the new potentiometer's end-stops. Access the calibration menu in the terminal and run Calibration Code 9001 (front EPC depth control) and Calibration Code 9002 (front EPC position control).
