FiatAgri 3 – Generator/Voltage Regulator: Excitation Shunt Fault

Issue description

The fault code indicates a problem within the charging system's generator, specifically related to its self-excitation circuit. The generator uses residual magnetism to generate an initial voltage that supplies current to the field winding to build up the main electrical output. A fault here means the generator fails to produce adequate charge for the battery and electrical system, which can be caused by a loss of residual magnetism, field winding failure, a faulty voltage regulator, or internal generator component issues.

Applies to these machines

  • 411R

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual inspection for loose or corroded wires on the generator and voltage regulator, and check the fan belt for proper tension and condition (a loose belt can cause undercharging).

  2. Test the battery to ensure it is fully charged and in good condition (approximately 12 volts with the engine off).

  3. Perform a voltage output test with the engine running at operating speed; voltage across battery terminals should read between 13 and 14.5 volts.

  4. Perform a generator field test (bypassing the regulator) by momentarily grounding the 'F' (Field) terminal to the generator case with the engine at high idle to see if the generator is capable of producing a charge.

  5. Perform a field winding test with the generator off by disconnecting the F+ and F- leads from the voltage regulator and checking for continuity and resistance.

Repair steps

  1. Flash the field (Restore residual magnetism)

If the generator has been sitting idle, it may have lost residual magnetism. Disconnect the field and armature wires. Connect a jumper wire from the battery positive terminal to the armature ('A') post. Momentarily touch another jumper wire from the battery negative terminal to the field ('F') post for 1-2 seconds (reverse polarity for positive-ground systems). Reconnect and re-test.

  2. Replace voltage regulator

If the generator field test indicates the generator is functional (ammeter shows strong charge when bypassed) but the system is not charging normally, replace the voltage regulator unit with a matching specification part.

  3. Repair or replace generator

If the generator field test shows no charge, disassemble the generator. Inspect and replace worn brushes, test and replace faulty diodes in the rectifier assembly, and inspect field and armature windings for burning, discoloration, or shorts. Reassemble and reinstall.
