Iveco 015D – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Incorrect fuel injection time for cylinder injector 3

The engine's control system has detected an anomaly in the injection event for cylinder #3. This is typically caused by a mechanical failure inside the injector (such as a clogged nozzle, worn internal valve, or excessive return leakage), an electrical issue in the injector's solenoid/wiring, or a loss of synchronization preventing the injector from firing at the correct millisecond.

   Wiring and Connector Inspection: Check the electrical plug at injector #3 and the wiring harness routing back to the EDC for chafing, breaks, or corrosion. A short or open circuit can cause timing faults.

   Injector Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the pins of injector #3 to ensure the solenoid is within specification and not shorting out.

   Leak-Off (Return Flow) Test: Perform a manual leak-off test on all cylinders simultaneously. If injector #3 is returning a significantly higher volume of fuel than the others, the internal valves are worn and it cannot hold rail pressure, confirming a mechanical failure.

   Sensor Verification: Check the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. If the EDC cannot accurately determine engine position, it may flag injection timing errors.

   Preparation

   Disconnect the vehicle's battery. Remove any engine covers, intake piping, or valve cover components blocking access to the fuel rail and injectors.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the injectors to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the cylinder head during removal.

   Disconnect Lines

   Unplug the electrical connector from injector #3. Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the injector. Disconnect the low-pressure fuel return (leak-off) pipe.

   Remove the Injector

   Remove the injector hold-down clamp or retaining bolt. Carefully pull the injector out of the cylinder head. Note: If the injector is seized due to carbon build-up, a specialized slide hammer or injector puller tool will be required.

   Clean the Bore

   Clean the injector bore and ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed from the bottom of the hole.

   Installation

   Fit a brand-new copper crush washer to the nozzle of the new injector. Insert the new injector into the bore.

   Torque

   Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the retaining bolt to the exact OEM specification. Reconnect the high-pressure line, return line, and electrical plug.

   ECU Coding

   Using an Iveco-compatible diagnostic scan tool, enter the new injector's IMA code (printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU. This calibrates the ECU to the specific flow characteristics of the new injector.

   Testing

   Reconnect the battery, prime the fuel system, clear the 015D fault code, and run the engine to check for leaks and smooth operation.
